Additional Information On Cash Drawers
If your POS system is deployed in a setting where methods of payment are processed then a cash drawer should be an integral part of the set up. The cash drawer is a secure and organized way to manage the different forms of payment in one place during hours of operation or per shift. There are several questions to consider when determining cash drawer needs:
- How many methods of payment do you accept?
Multiple methods of payment may require multiple “media” slots or places to easily slip the checks, coupons and receipts under the cash tray for an organized drop at the end of a shift. The MMF Cash Drawer Media Plus has three media slots with adjustable partitions for customized settings while the POS-X Xc19Z Series has one media slot but interfaces with every printer on the market.
- What types of POS terminals, receipt printers and software are you using or going to be using?
If the terminal is a simple non-computerized cash register then a basic manual cash drawer may suffice. In settings where the traffic flow and terminals are more complex and connected to a receipt printer, an automated cash drawer system enables the drawer to open with the closing of each transaction. When a receipt begins to print the drawer opens and the cashier can take payment, make change or what ever step is next.
- How many users will be accessing the POS terminal at one time and do they each need their own cash drawer?
If the operating environment is multiple server-one till then all hands have access to the drawer and terminal log in security and money handling procedures are potentially more relaxed. If the setting requires more security and each “till” or the bank inside the cash drawer is assigned to a specific user then usually there is a 2 drawer maximum per terminal although more drawers are possible. Each time an employee logs onto the terminal and rings a transaction then their own till opens up as per their user info. End of day they count and are responsible for the amounts within.
- What are the size and security needs of the cash drawers themselves, i.e. do they need to lock and be metal or is a plastic housing ok?
We carry several option from heavy duty models such as the APG Series 100 that is a heavy duty, powder coated, full size 19” drawer that is warranted to last a lifetime to the medium duty MMF Cash Drawer Val-u Line series that comes in 13” and 16” sizes.
