First, you should know a little about how Point of Sale (POS) differs from what is usually called “real computing.” POS combines cash register functions with accounting, reporting, credit card transactions, barcode scanning and inventory management within one package. Instead of opening and closing different business applications each time, POS software integrates these functions into a cohesive application that is easier to use and that tracks all aspects of the business in a secure manner. To accomplish this feat a POS computer must allow several different peripheral devices to “hook-up” and work together. (Most “off-the-shelf'” PC's only have USB ports)

Computer Basics
POS applications usually do not require extensive resources, ie: Lots of RAM, Big hard drive, etc. So, here is an example of a computer that is configured for POS use:

• Comes with Windows XP Pro
• 4 Serial, 4 USB 2.0, 1 Cash Drawer Port
• 1 GB RAM standard, upgradeable to 2 GB

Notice that a typical POS computer comes with Serial, USB, and cash drawer ports (to plug in printers, scanners, and a cash drawer). The ports you will need on your computer are determined by the POS application you are using and what ports the software uses to communicate with the peripheral devices. (many times older applications used serial printers while many modern applications utilize USB ports). The differences in software is why so many different port types are needed in a POS computer...you never know what applications you will be using for your business and what device ports are supported by the software.

Additionally, if you are operating a restaurant, tavern, or salon, a fanless computer is strongly suggested. These computers employ alternate forms of cooling that prevents grease, blown dust, hair, etc., from damaging the computer from heat buildup.
